Job description
Description of role:
This three-year, half-time position arises from a University of Maryland Grand Challenges Award (Climate-GC) that supports experiential education and uses a research-to-impact philosophy to focus monitoring, analysis, and prediction on protecting MD communities from climate impacts. The Award will support research-to-impact activities in three areas:
- Extreme Weather and Natural Disasters in a changing world– characterizing vulnerabilities on and around the Chesapeake Bay through high-resolution monitoring and predictions of time, location, and severity to support regional policy and response preparation.
- Sustainable Agriculture in the face of the Changing Climate– correlating socioeconomic factors, high resolution climate data, and advances in crop management to help policymakers and farmers develop climate-resilient agriculture
- Threats to our Land-Water system– identifying how multiple causal factors, including sea-level rise, freshwater salinization, coastal erosion and changing watershed run-off, threaten our streams, rivers, coastal water and ground water. Using this knowledge to help policy makers and communities prevent negative consequences to societal use of water.
The Research-to-Impact component of this initiative will build on UMD’s world class research to define monitoring, prediction and mitigation opportunities to help protect Maryland communities from climate impacts. The Award Project manager will provide research-project management for the Climate-GC activities and will be a direct report to the PI of the Climate-GC Award. The research-project management activities will include supporting the three research-to-impact project teams, coordinating field work and community engagement, working with the Experiential Educational coordinator on student engagement with the projects, maintaining records for reporting on the Climate-GC project, and strategically engaging with proposals to expand the Climate-GC activities.
