A stunning race in the 5,000m has just concluded.
Jacob Kiplimo, Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli and Jacob Krop turned the screws harder and harder on the rest of the field and engaged in a thrilling sprint finish down the final 200, with the Kiplimo completing a superb Ugandan treble in the long distance events at these Games (5k, 10k and marathon).
He won the 10k as well, by the way.
It’s one of the great sights in modern sport, the East Africans setting a tempo at the front to put the rest of the field deep into the hurt locker and then laying it all out there in the finale.
The winning time was 13:08.08.
Aussie Jack Rayner came in seventh with a time of 13:24.90.
Aussie Matt Ramsden, who came tenth with 13:30.38, has just told Channel 7 that the African runners varied their pace and just broke the rest of the field for the final couple of laps.
A huge cheer for the last-placed athlete, Rosefelo Siosi of the Solomon Islands, who finished a solid four and a half minutes behind the winner, and 90 seconds behind the next last athlete.
Top stuff.
