SH2 southbound was congested at Petone on Saturday.
Closures on State Highway 58 for safety improvements resulted in long delays for drivers on State Highway 1 and State Highway 2 in Wellington on Saturday.
Significant delays of up to 45 minutes plagued both SH1, southbound, between Tawa and Ngauranga with the queue back to the Tawa interchange from about 3pm on Saturday. The queue on SH2 southbound between Lower Hutt and Ngauranga stretched to north of Melling.
By 6.15pm on Saturday congestion had eased on State Highway 1 and by 7.40pm congestion had eased between Lower Hutt’s Melling interchange and Ngauranga remained.
SH58, which links up Porirua City and the Hutt Valley, is closed from late Friday night to early Monday morning for safety improvement works so Waka Kotahi warned of more delays for motorists on Sunday.

Contractors were reconstructing a section of the highway to prepare the road for new median and side safety barriers.
It means those travelling between the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kāpiti Coast must use SH1 and SH2.
Waka Kotahi said drivers must plan ahead and expect delays when travelling between Wellington/Hutt Valley and the Kāpiti Coast, and that people should avoid journeys where possible, use public transport, or allow extra time for their travel.
