Deputy President David Mabuza will lead the “Return to Play: It is in Your Hands” Covid-19 vaccination social mobilisation campaign in Gqwerba on Friday 12 November.
The campaign, run by the Department of Sport Arts and Culture is aimed at getting more people vaccinated so that concerts, festivals and sporting events can open up and welcome audiences and spectators once again.
Minister of Sport Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa and the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane, will accompany Mabuza on the vaccination campaign trail.
Since the roll-out of the “Return to Play: It is in Your Hands” campaign, the country has witnessed the partial relaxation of restrictions. A total of 2000 vaccinated spectators were allowed to attend the South Africa/ Ethiopia World Cup qualifier at the FNB stadium in October, for the first time since the announcement of the Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020.
The Eastern Cape leg of the social mobilisation campaign, led by Mabuza, will be coupled with the second round of the Vooma Vaccination Weekend drive, which is set to kick off from 12-14 November, following the successful launch of the national vaccination campaign last month.
The campaign kicked-off in Gauteng at the FNB Stadium on 8 September 2021, and has since been launched in four provinces and succeeded in getting influencers vaccinated.
High number of people turn up for Covid-19 jab
The first Covid-19 Vooma Vaccination Weekend led to an unprecedented level of engagement across many districts. It achieved 75% of its target of 500,000 vaccinations over the three-day period, and the government hopes to achieve 100% of that target in the next Vooma Weekend.
Vaccination sites will be open across the country during Vooma weekend, and the goal is to ensure at least 95% capacity on Saturday 13 November.
While fewer sites will open on Sunday, the focus will be on an outreach to large faith-based congregations that are willing to allow members to be vaccinated on that day.
