This past weekend, the 48th Cape Town Cycle Tour took place in the Mother City, but it has tragically been confirmed after the event that a cyclist passed away.
While the race is celebrated as the world’s largest timed cycling event, the day was dampened by the loss of a rider who reportedly suffered a suspected cardiac arrest during the 109km challenge that featured over 30,000 participants.
In a brief statement, the Cape Town Cycle Tour expressed its “deep sadness” and extended their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

In the results from the day, Ryan Gibbons sprinted to victory on Sunday, with the elite men’s race having been chaotic at times, with multiple crashes and gusting cross winds in the Southern Peninsula making positioning in the group vital.
Earlier, South Africa’s Lisa Bone won the women’s elite Cape Town Cycle Tour in a sprint finish ahead of Russia’s Daria Pravilova and American Kate Courtney.
