DefSAT 2024 Inaugurates with a Convergence of Key Figures Shaping India’s Defence and Space Landscape


New Delhi. DefSAT 2024 Day One unfolds on February 7 at a crucial juncture as India readies itself to harness robust space capabilities for self-reliance in defence technology. As the world observes the dynamic intersection of technology, security, and geopolitics, India, is a key player in defence and space.

Aligning with the visionary goals outlined by the Prime Minister and the Defence Ministry, DefSAT 2024 charts a course towards a modern and future-ready sector, safeguarding India’s aspirations and interests. Scheduled from 7th to 9th February 2024 at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, DefSAT 2024 brings together nearly 300 visionaries, thought leaders, and stakeholders, facilitating an unprecedented convergence of expertise from government agencies, armed forces, policymakers, space industry leaders, technology innovators, and diplomats, this includes a global audience representing Indian Embassies abroad who are closely tuned in to the live streaming of the conference proceedings.

The inaugural lineup of notable speakers and dignitaries adding to its prestige and depth which include Gen Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff; His Excellency, Mr Philip Green, Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Padma Shree Dr Shailesh Nayak, Director NIAS, Former Secretary Ministry of Earth Science; AVM Sanjay Bhatnagar, Director, CENJOWS; and Lt Gen PJS Pannu, Chairman Space Committee on Defence, SIA-India.

General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, delivered a stirring Inaugural Address at the DefSAT2024 Conference and Expo, emphasizing the transformative potential of the private sector. With the metaphor ‘Little aprons grow mighty oaks,’ he underscored the immense growth possibilities inherent in small beginnings. General Chauhan stated that the Indian armed forces have earmarked funds to the tune of Rs 25,000 crore to meet its defence space requirements, highlighting the significant investment in this sector,and presenting a significant opportunity for the private sector to leverage. The burgeoning prowess of India’s private sector, foreseeing its ascent to becoming a household name. His words resonate as a call to action, inspiring stakeholders to harness their potential and propel India’s defence and space industries to unprecedented heights.

Special Address by His Excellency, Australia High Commission, Mr Philip Green stated, “In today’s interconnected world, Australia and India stand as natural and strategic partners in the pursuit of technological excellence and innovation. Australia’s robust satellite tracking capabilities, coupled with its thriving robotics industry and innovative growth trajectory, complement India’s status as a tech giant. Together, we forge ahead, leveraging our shared strengths and mutual interests to drive advancements in space technology and deepen bilateral relations.”

SIA-India and the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA) have solidified their partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aimed at enhancing collaboration and fostering mutual growth in the space industry. This landmark agreement was formalized during the esteemed DefSat Conference & Expo, graced by distinguished figures including Gen Anil Chauhan, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, Chief of Defence Staff, His Excellency, Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Mr. Philip Green, and also Air Cmde Terry Van Haren DSM, Retd, who represented Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA).

Lt. Gen. PJS Pannu, Chairman of the Defence Space Committee at SIA-India, emphasized India’s progression in space exploration, highlighting the imperative for military engagement given our evolving security landscape. His insights underscore the pivotal role of decision-centric warfare, autonomous systems, and AI integration in shaping the future of defence. With robust support from government bodies, organizations, and industry leaders, DefSAT 2024 promises to elevate India’s defence space capabilities to unprecedented heights.”

Key sessions at DefSAT 2024 explored critical topics in defence and space. Chaired by Dr. P V Radhadevi, Director of Advanced Data Processing Research Institute (ADRIN-ISRO), and Air Marshal Anil Chopra, PVSM, AVSM, VM, VSM (Retd), Director General of the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS), discussions covered Meshed Intelligence, Military Remote Sensing, and Space-Enabled Precision Battles. They delved into advanced payloads, Data Fusion, AI integration, and the convergence of Earth Observation Sensors for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and precision battles.

Another session, chaired by Maj Gen C S Mann, VSM, Additional Director General of the Army Design Bureau, focused on Collaborative Frontiers in defence innovation, fostering collaboration and technological advancements. Additionally, Air Marshal GS Bedi, AVSM, VM, VSM (Retd), Former Director General (Flight Inspection & Safety) and Distinguished Fellow at CAPS, chaired a session on Redefining Aerospace, discussing the evolving landscape of air and near space dynamics, ISR operations, and strategies for seamless integration across domains.

DefSAT Day 1 concluded with resounding success, offering a platform for robust discussions, strategic collaborations, and visionary insights. The expo left attendees inspired and equipped to drive innovation and progress in the realms of defence and space technology. The Exposition Partners included XDLINX Labs, Anritsu, GalaxEye, JV Micronics, AgniKul Cosmos, KaleidEO, Optimum Viking Satcom (India) PVT LTD, Saptang Labs, Pixxel, and Maitravaruna.

The SIA-India is proud to have support from pivotal government entities and esteemed organizations such as Niti Aayog, ISRO, NSIL, IN-SPACe, DoT, DRDO, and Ministry of Defence. The agenda spanning three days, offers insightful deliberations in comprehensive sessions on diverse defence space topics, including interactive exercises and industry roundtables for practical insights and collaborative discussions.
