The future of many players are up in the air as the NBA’s trade window remains open and one Sacramento Kings star could be on the move.
A struggling Kings side recently parted ways with their coach Mike Brown following a five-game winless run which sees the side sit 12th in the Western Conference.
Before his firing coach Brown specifically called out the sides star player De’Aaron Fox, it appears this may have been the beginning of the end for their relationship and Brown’s future.
Fox recently spoke out about not wanting to sign a contract extension with the side following their lack of ability to challenge for championships.
Despite the Kings securing their first win since December 13th over the Dallas Mavericks, in which Fox scored 33 points as well as six rebounds and six assists, his future remains uncertain.
Cousins warns Fox against ‘risking’ NBA future
At the age of 27, Fox is entering his basketball prime and his impatience at the Kings’ lack of fight is forcing him to question his future.
Fox’s super-agent is said to be assessing the 2023 NBA All-Star’s options, it is likely he will have many potential suitors considering his season numbers.
Averaging 26.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.3 assists is no easy task in a team that has been struggling to secure wins this season.
Despite his star quality and undoubted ability former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins has warned Fox about the dangers of running down his contract.
Speaking on Fan Duel’s Run It Back, Cousins said: “It’s always a risky move and the reason I can say that is I did the exact same thing with the situation in New Orleans and I ended up getting injured that contract season.
“It’s a risky move and obviously we wish him health and we wish him well but it’s a risky move and hopefully this strategy plays out in his favor, and from his perspective, I can understand you’ve been there for close to pushing the 10-year mark and it’s been the same thing every season.
“Obviously he can make money wherever he decides to go but he wants to stay with that home team but the home team isn’t making the correct moves to take you to that next level.”
Fox shining light since arriving in Sacramento
After being selected as the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft the fans in Sacramento have seen exactly why there was so much hype around Fox.
Since his rookie season, the star has not averaged less than 30 minutes for the Kings proving what a vital cog he is in their structure.
Fox has held up his end of the bargain with his numbers increasing year-on-year, yet the Kings have failed to keep up with his meteoric rise.
He has averaged over 21 points per season since the 2019-20 season.
De’Aaron Fox | 2022-23 | 2023-24 | 2024-25* |
Points | 25.0 | 26.6 | 26.5 |
Rebounds | 4.2 | 4.6 | 5.1 |
Assists | 6.1 | 5.6 | 6.3 |
Despite still fighting to put up game-winning numbers for his side it appears all is not well regarding his relationship with the Kings franchise despite rubbishing comments from former NBA star Lou Williams on his relationship with former coach Mike Brown.
There is no doubt that the Kings will be desperate to keep hold of Fox but with his contract running down, it looks like a decision has been made.
