Of all the subsectors of influencer culture, easily one of the most jarring and irksome is the emergence of finance influencers. It’s all white noise.
Today, we’re going to focus on how side hustles, and their entire concept have been captured by this pernicious element of the attention-economy, but how you can turn a side hustle into a nice bit on the side, or even a career opportunity.
You can find so many opinions on whether social media influence is the future, or whether it’s a digital Ponzi built on the quenchless inclination for internet attention exhibited by millions. The answer lies somewhere in the middle. When it is utilized correctly, it is a remarkable tool, and when it is overused, it can hinder a business, or a side hustle. It all depends on the market you’re aiming for, or what your side hustle actually entails.

I know many writers who started blogging as a side hustle and built their own client base over a number of years before turning it into a full-time role.
It is about persistence, following your passion, and understanding when somebody is simply using social media as a vehicle to enrich themselves. It becomes easier to spot these people when you have years of experience sniffing them out and understanding their language and MO.
Rather than criticize the concept of the side hustle, criticize those who use it as a means to pull the wool over people’s eyes on social media. Seek out resources, check their legitimacy and credentials, and remember, if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. If you are looking to embark on a side hustle, which an increasing number of Gen Z are, be sure to check your sources and pursue it in a field you are passionate about, rather than looking to make a quick dollar.
