How is it to be a digital nomad in Mexico, my favorite country? In this post I’d like to describe one of the best places I’ve worked from when traveling. Read till the end to find out about a great contest to Mexico. And participate, please!

But let’s start from the beginning…

In love with Mexico

You might already know that when I left my flight attendant job in 2011, I decided to leave everything behind in Southern Italy and start my career as a travel blogger/digital nomad. I started my blog already a few months before that, on the 30th September 2010.

My first destination after giving most of my belongings to charity in Italy had to be Mexico.

I was in love with Mexico since I was a kid. I have no idea where that love came from, maybe one of my previous lives, but it was undeniable. Then when I was at the University in Madrid, Spain via Erasmus, I had posters of pyramids in Mexiro and Peru on the wall. And I even wrote both my BA and MA thesis about the Aztecs in Mexico, their spiritual/ritual practices and pyramids.

Aw, and my nose also seems to be shaped as if ”broken” which resembles the noses of native inhabitants in Mexico. What are the odds?!

As you can see, I’ve always loved Mexico even before I ever visited it.

That has not changed. 

Why Mexico?

When I spent my first 3 months traveling solo around Mexico in 2011, my love grew even stronger. You know: the always smiling locals, great food (OMG please give me guacamole every day), nice beaches, interesting nature, humble native inhabitants and everything is so colorful… Mexico simply has it all.

I revisited Mexico a couple of times even though I was robbed there in 2011. Yes, I stayed a Mexico freak even after that unpleasant situation.

Being a digital nomad in Mexico

The last time I traveled around Mexico was in early 2022 when I spent 3 and a half months in the Yucatan peninsula. 

Initially, I flew to Mexico to ”relax and get my energy back”. That was my plan already when I was booking my flights a few weeks before the trip itself.

But just a few days before my flight I stepped on 2 nails so I don’t think I even need to tell you that with 4 holes through my entire left foot I could not do much but chill anyway. The Universe put me into an uncomfortable situation to realize that I finally HAD to take time to relax, no matter what.

So I did!

Thankfully my foot healed rather fast also thanks to healthy vegan diet, loads of sunshine, walking barefoot and salty ocean water. Yay!

After the first 2 relaxing months in Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Bacalar I rented a tiny apartment for myself in Quintana Roo. It was located at a small community area in the jungle. Perfect place to catch up with online work and still feel like on holidays in between, right?

Why was it a good place to work online from?

• I didn’t have to share my small apartment with anyone else and could write blog posts even not wearing (almost) anything. You know, it was very hot and humid when I was there so that came in handy. 
• fast wifi inside the apartment – usually, when there was no storm, the wifi was fast enough to do what I had to do.
• swimming pool – I could cool down in the pool or go for a short swim as many times as I wanted to during the day. It felt great to do that in between sitting in front of my laptop.
• nice view from my balcony – I could see the swimming pool and many palm trees. I truly enjoyed how green the whole surrounding area really was.
• it was not very luxurious but had everything I needed – big bed, my own bathroom with a big shower, small kitchen, bar table, fridge etc. And yes, it was clean.

• there was a lot of light in the apartment which always helps me to focus better during the day.
• although I could sometimes hear the echo from the cars from the main road, I tried to focus on the birds chirping and colorful butterflies flying right outside of my apartment.
• I could watch pretty sunsets right from my balcony.
• in between online work, I could go for a walk in the jungle. So calming!
• location – at the same time I did not really feel like I was stuck in the jungle far from humanity when I did not want to be. The apartment building was situated just a few minute walk from the main road where I could hop on a local van/bus. It gave me a chance to spend my free time in places like Akumal, Tulum, Puerto Aventuras or even Playa del Carmen. 
• Tulum and Playa del Carmen have loads of amazing places to get different vegan food: organic fruit and veggies, vegan cheese, hummus, acai bowls, vegan quesadilla and pizza, brownie… you name it. You have no idea how much I appreciated it. It’s rather expensive there but having all those vegan options made it so much easier for me to spend a month there. 

The only problem was all the insects, cockroaches and geckos that found it funny when they did not let me sleep at night. And sometimes, some of my neighbors from other apartments would host parties and listen to loud music which I did not fancy. Maybe I am getting too old but I’m not into loud music, parties and crowds, and even though I usually tend to go to bed late, I prefer silence. 

Although it was really difficult to get proper sleep with all the noise and jungle insects walking all over me, I did manage to get loads of work done while staying at that apartment. Good because I was so behind with everything.
