The Detroit Pistons are on the rise amid one of the biggest turnarounds in recent NBA history.
While many teams hope a draft pick can make an instant impact, the Detroit Pistons are a lesson in patience.
Finishing with a woeful 14-68 record in 2023-24, the appointment of coach JB Bickerstaff has acted as a catalyst for a stunning recovery, along with a few sensible free agent acquisitions.
Days ago former number one draft pick Cade Cunningham shot a dramatic three-point game winner over the Miami Heat, a ninth successive defeat for the 2023 finalists.
It was a win that signalled a change of the guard, with the Pistons recently ascending to sixth place, with their 39-31 record closing in on matching the fourth placed 40-29 Pacers.
Draymond Green backs Detroit Pistons glory
Set for a playoff spot, Udonis Haslem recently tipped the Detroit Pistons to defeat the New York Knicks if they meet in the first round.
Current Warriors star Draymond Green has an even loftier ambition for the team – he believes Cade Cunningham will deliver a title to the Detroit Pistons.
While backing away from predicting it will come this year, Draymond Green is convinced Cunningham will win at least one title for Detroit.
Speaking on his podcast, he said: “I’m gonna say it here first, Cade Cunningham will bring a championship back to Detroit. I think he will.
“He got the talent, he got the demeanor. He got the size that a lot of people underrate. He got the size to put a team on his shoulders and actually carry. Cade Cunningham will bring championship basketball, championship rings, at least a ring, back to the Detroit Pistons.
“I think Cade is ready to take that next step and ready to take that next step with the team.”
Not this year for the Pistons
Draymond Green has already vowed the Golden State Warriors will win the NBA championship this season.
He made the claim at the All-Star break, following the acquisition of Jimmy Butler.
But he has high respect for the Pistons, and praised their signing of recent Warriors teammate Dennis Schroder.
Green believes a few steps are required for total success for the Pistons – but is adamant a ring could head to Detroit eventually, more than 20 years after their last title win in 2004.
He said: “I don’t know when it’s going to be, I think they still got some fine tuning of the roster and different stuff that needs to happen, but over the course of time, Cade Cunningham will bring a championship back to Detroit.”
