Since Friday, Israeli aircraft had pummeled Gaza while the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group fired hundreds of rockets at Israel in retaliation.
The three-day Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip left 43 Palestinians killed, including 15 children and four women, and 311 were wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
Two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been living inder an Israeli siege since 2007.
Egypt had conducted intense communications with both sides since the outbreak of the fighting to reach a ceasefire agreement.
On Friday, Israel assassinated prominent Islamic Jihad leader Taysir Al-Jaabari in an airstrike on Gaza prompting the group to retaliate.
Israel on Monday said it was partially reopening crossings into Gaza for humanitarian needs and would fully open them if “calm” was maintained.
In May 2021, Egypt also brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian factions after a devastating Israeli onslugh on the strip left hundreds killed and injured and destroyed tens of residential and commercial buildings.
