Electrochem condemns armed attack on facility
Electrochem Ghana Limited has condemned a violent raid on its facility by armed individuals claiming affiliation with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The attack, which occurred around 3:00 am, involved assailants wielding cutlasses and firearms, reportedly led by a known political activist.
The intruders ransacked the premises, stealing essential office supplies and large quantities of salt from the warehouse. The incident caused significant financial losses and disrupted operations. Several employees were also injured during the chaos, raising concerns about the safety and security of staff.
Electrochem, which employs about 1,800 permanent workers and over 3,000 casual labourers during the salt mining season, warned that such attacks jeopardise the company’s operations and the livelihoods of its employees.
The company stated that these recurring security breaches undermine the investment climate and risk deterring both local and international investors.
Since taking over the concession, Electrochem has invested in community development initiatives, including the establishment of community pans, an outgrower scheme, clean water infrastructure, education projects and micro-loan programmes for women entrepreneurs.
The company has called on the government and security agencies to swiftly apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators to ensure justice and deter future attacks. It further noted the need for immediate action to protect businesses, safeguard the local economy and restore confidence among investors.
Electrochem Ghana has also urged public condemnation of the violence and called for a thorough investigation into the incident to bring those responsible to justice.
CEO Abdul Razak Adam reiterated the company’s commitment to community development and urged authorities to prioritise the safety of workers and the stability of the region’s economy.
