For many years, a deaf couple in Kavengero village in Embu county struggled to make ends meet due to the struggles with their hearing impairment.
Things would soon change for Ephraim Njeru and his wife Mary Likhuyachi when a non-governmental organisation started a project for them.
In an interview with KBC TV, the couple disclosed that they idea by the Deaf Empowerment Society of Kenya to drill a borehole turned everything around.
Ephraim indicated that for years they lived in biting poverty because they had very little options on what they would do to make ends meet.

The two beneficiaries added that the availability of the borehole made them embrace horticulture as a means to eke living.
They make at least KSh 1,000 daily
Ever since the initiative was started, their lives have gotten better as they earn an average of KSh 1,000 every day from horticulture.
“I am so grateful that we have water because there are people we sell to, as well as vegetables and kitchen spices,” Mary added.
With the pilot project successful, the society is looking to sink more borehole in Mbeere to boost the horticultural industry and uplift the lives of those with disabilities in the county.
