Earlier this week, millions of households discovered that their energy bills would increase dramatically in the coming months after energy regulator Ofgem announced a new price cap of £2,000 a year. The current price cap level is £1,277, but with experts predicting a rise of £693 on the average energy bill, more than a quarter of British households are likely to be pushed into fuel poverty.
The price cap sets a limit on the rates a supplier can charge for each unit of gas and electricity you use and is reviewed twice a year, with the new levels coming into force every April and October, The Mirror reported. Millions of Londoners could struggle as the capital adapts to the new cost of living, which is not helped by an increase in National Insurance contributions and the controversial end to the temporary £20 Universal Credit uplift.
It’s even worse news for Londoners, as a majority of London boroughs are expected to exceed the predicted £693 rise in costs, with areas such as Harrow seeing a four-figure increase in bills, while Hillingdon and Kingston are not far behind. Below is a borough-by-borough breakdown of how much a London household could see a rise in their new energy bills. Figures are based on local average domestic usage according to Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, and Ofgem’s price cap figures for customers paying by direct debit.
