Washington (dpa) – At a meeting with US President Joe Biden in Washington, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has strongly advocated stepping up military aid to Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia. Scholz said that what the American and European allies had pledged to date was not sufficient. “We have to see how we can boost our collaborative efforts.” This is the Federal Chancellor’s third visit to the US capital Washington since taking office just over two years ago.
It was now necessary to send out a “very clear signal” to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Scholz emphasised. “We need to show that he can’t count on our support waning.” The Federal Chancellor added: “The support we provide will be on a big enough scale and it will last long enough.” The USA and Germany are the two main suppliers of weapons to Ukraine. Other issues addressed during Scholz’s visit to the USA include the conflict in the Middle East and the NATO summit in Washington this summer.
