Five enter the race for next LSK president
Thursday January 11 2024
Five candidates are in the race for the top leadership of Law Society of Kenya (LSK) in the upcoming poll slated for March.
The candidates who submitted their nomination papers yesterday are former vice-president Carolyne Kamende, current vice-president Faith Odhiambo, Harriet Mboche, Peter Wanyama and Bernard Ngetich.
The five will be seeking to replace Erick Theuri whose term comes to an end in March 2024.
Mr Theuri became the 50th president of LSK when he took over from Nelson Havi in March 2022.
Mr Havi was bundled out of office by a caucus of branch chairpersons before the end of his term due to an ending leadership wrangle.
“I have answered the summons of members of the society to view for the LSK’s president post. If elected, I will champion for the rights of the society,” said Ms Kamende in an interview with the Business Daily yesterday. This will not be the first time Ms Kamende is vying for the LSK top job.
In 2022, she also offered her candidature for the position but lost to Mr Theuri.
Mr Theuri, a corporate audit specialist and advocate garnered, 1,811 against Kamende’s 1,085.
Mr Theuri also trounced former LSK Council Members Omwanza Ombati, Coast Branch chairman Mathew Nyabena and Bernard Kipkoech, who once served as LSK treasurer.
The polls were conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) across 25 designated LSK polling stations countrywide.
The electronic voting was managed by the society’s seven-member elections board headed by Senior Counsel Janmohamed Zehrabanu.
LSK is also expected to vote for its representative to the Judicial Service Commission whose is also coming to an end.
