From Lakes to Hot Springs! 5 Must-Try Activities at Mount Fuji

Date published: 18 January 2024

Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan and a World Heritage Site, is a globally renowned destination. Towering over the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures, Mount Fuji can be seen not only from the suburbs but from other locations around Tokyo and Kanagawa. This majestic mountain has long been an object of worship for the people of Japan, considered a spiritual center for many. People come in droves from all over the world to appreciate its beauty.

While there are a variety of ways to appreciate the grandeur of Mount Fuji, today we would like to introduce five exceptional experiences that we recommend. From climbing the mountain to partaking in other outdoor activities, to unwinding in the hot springs against the beautiful backdrop, there’s something for everyone!

1. Guided Mt. Fuji Climb: A Spectacular Sunrise View

To truly get to know Mount Fuji, nothing beats actually climbing it. While anyone can admire Fuji’s grandeur and beauty from a distance, climbing is the only real way to appreciate its unique energy, rugged nature, and extraordinary atmosphere in a way one simply cannot experience from afar. Watching the sunrise from Mount Fuji, also known as “Goraiko,” is another amazing experience that leaves a lasting impact. So if time permits, why not plan an overnight stay and witness this natural spectacle?

Mount Fuji’s climbing season spans from early July to early September. During this period, there are a variety of tours available, ranging from convenient one-day trips to more immersive overnight stays. While Mount Fuji is accessible to novice climbers, it’s still important to come equipped with the right gear, mindset, and some basic knowledge of mountain climbing. Prepare your clothing and personal belongings well in advance, and be sure to seek the advice of professionals or experienced climbers before attempting it for yourself. No matter how simple it may seem, mountain weather is highly unpredictable, and nature can be unforgiving. Never go out unprepared or under-dressed.

2. Activities at the Lakes and Forests: An Up-close and Personal View from the Foot of the Mountain

At the base of Mt. Fuji lies an abundance of natural wonders, such as lakes and lush forests. On the Yamanashi Prefecture side are the Fuji Five Lakes, which collectively encompass lakes Kawaguchiko, Saiko, Shojiko, Motosuko, and Yamanakako, all at the foot of the mountain. There are various activities and tours available at these lakes, including sightseeing boats, swan boats, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), all of which can be enjoyed while soaking in the splendor of Mount Fuji.

The unobstructed views from the water’s surface offers an up-close and personal encounter with the majestic mountain, making these activities a truly immersive experience in nature. The scenery varies by time of day and season, from sunrises and sunsets to fall foliage and fresh greenery, so there’s something to enjoy at any time of the year. And with so many beginner-friendly activities, anyone can enjoy with peace of mind!

The appeal of Fujikyu Highland is its location right near Mt. Fuji, offering visitors the chance to revel in the spectacular views. Amidst the 40 attractions lies an assortment of unique roller coasters, many of which have earned recognition in the Guinness Book of Records. It’s the perfect amusement park for those looking for a thrill!

One of the most iconic examples is Fujiyama. This heart-pounding ride includes steep descents and sharp turns, with a breathtaking up-close view of Mount Fuji from its highest point. In addition, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Fujiyama, two new additions were recently introduced in 2021 with even more amazing views of the mountain: Fujiyama Tower and Fujiyama Sky Deck.

When visiting Fujikyu Highland, we recommend the special pass that includes both park admission and local transportation. Not only does this pass grant entry into both Fujikyu Highland and the children’s amusement park Grinpa, it also includes unlimited rides on local buses and trains in the Yamanashi and Shizuoka Regions, as well as discounted admission to 12 facilities, including nearby museums.

4. Fuji + Bus Tour: Food, Shopping, and Spectacular Views

For those visiting Mount Fuji on a more limited time schedule, the classic choice is a Mount Fuji + More Bus Tour. This well-rounded tour includes not only the recommended Mount Fuji viewing spots, but also takes you to other highly recommended attractions in the vicinity.

Many tours allow you to enjoy both sightseeing and activities, all while taking in the fabulous Fuji views. For example, some will take you to Fuji Five Lakes, Oshino Hakkai, Arakurayama Sengen Park, Kanagawa Prefecture’s Hakone Ropeway, Lake Ashi, Shizuoka Prefecture’s Mishima Skywalk, which boasts the longest suspension bridge in Japan, and Gotemba Premium Outlets.

Japan’s distinct charm lies in its beautiful, ever-changing scenery in each of the four seasons, not only on Mount Fuji, but throughout the entire surrounding natural landscape. Cherry blossoms bloom in the spring, vibrant greenery emerges in the summer, and snowy landscapes adorn the scenery in winter. But perhaps the most recommended time of the year is fall, with its captivating autumn foliage that beautifully harmonizes with the mountain’s snowcapped summit, a spectacle that can only be seen at this time. There’s also plenty of delectable local dishes to enjoy in the fall, and many tours that include fruit picking, such as grapes and apples.

Given that Mount Fuji is a volcano, that also means there are plenty of hot springs to enjoy in the surrounding area. Now that you’ve made it this far, why not savor a truly luxurious experience and immerse yourself in Japan’s onsen culture with a view of Mount Fuji? Especially around Lake Kawaguchiko in Yamanashi Prefecture, there are numerous hot spring resorts offering views of the mountain, right from the hot spring baths! Whether from your room at your inn or from the springs, you’re sure to find relaxation as you appreciate the ever-changing scenery of Mount Fuji.

No time to stay overnight? Then treat yourself to a hot spring day trip! There are plenty of spots offering daytime onsen experiences, such as Hottarakashi Onsen Aka no Yu/Kokko no Yu, Yamanakako Onsen Benifuji no Yu, and Gokurakuyu Mishima-ten.
