Cologne (dpa) – Gamescom, the world’s largest trade fair for computer and video games, has begun in Cologne; meanwhile, the industry is keen to overcome the problems it currently faces. Many gaming companies are under pressure because of rising costs and a decline in demand. Featuring a whole host of short films to advertise new games, the “Opening Night Live” marked the start of the public show, which attracted 320,000 visitors to Cologne’s trade fair grounds last year. More than 1,400 exhibitors from 64 countries are presenting their latest video and computer games, alongside other technical innovations and services.
Though Gamescom is a public event, many industry representatives also attend to forge contacts and drum up new business. Gaming fans can try out new games. The event will end on Sunday, until which time plenty of colourfully attired cosplayers – dressed as characters from series and games – will be visible on the trade fair grounds.
