Berlin (d.de) – The international development alliance to support the Sahel, the Sahel Alliance, is holding its fifth General Assembly in Berlin until 16 July. Development Minister Svenja Schulze, President of the Alliance, has invited representatives of the 27 members and observers of the Alliance to attend, along with the Sahel countries Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad. Non-governmental organisations from the Sahel are also involved for the first time. Svenja Schulze took over the presidency of the Alliance a year ago from Spanish Foreign and Development Minister José Manuel Albares and is standing as a candidate for another year. In addition to discussions on further support, the agenda also includes dialogue on cross-border cooperation with the neighbouring coastal states of West Africa. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s current trip will also include discussion of the situation in the Sahel countries with partner countries Senegal and Ivory Coast.
