Following the attack by Jewish settlers on a village in the West Bank and the murder of a Palestinian, German and EU politicians are demanding an end to the violence in the territory occupied by Israel. On Thursday, around 50 masked settlers stormed Jit, a village close to Nablus. They killed a 22-year-old Palestinian there and set fire to at least four houses and six cars. One rioter was arrested.
On Friday, the attack was condemned by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. “Palestinians have a right to live in safety. Israel has an obligation to protect Palestinians in the West Bank, stop these attacks and prosecute the perpetrators. There must be no impunity for such acts of violence,” stated the Federal Foreign Office on X. EU High Representative Josep Borrell has announced a proposal for sanctions against violent settlers’ enablers, including some members of the Israeli government. “Day after day, in an almost total impunity, Israeli settlers fuel violence in the occupied West Bank, contributing to endanger any chance of peace. The Israeli government must stop these unacceptable actions immediately,” he wrote on X.
