Berlin (dpa) – Germany’s Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Berlin, marking the official start of his visit to Germany. Zelenskiy’s motorcade arrived at Bellevue Palace, the official residence of the German head of state, on Sunday morning. After signing the visitors’ book, the Ukrainian guest is due to hold talks with the German president.
Afterwards, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz intends to receive Zelenskiy with military honours at the Chancellery. Following one-on-one talks and further discussions in a small group, a press conference is scheduled.
On Sunday afternoon, Zelenskiy and the Ukrainian people are to be honoured in Aachen with the Charlemagne Prize for work done in the service of European unity. Scholz will give the laudatory speech. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will also speak at the ceremony.
