Berlin (dpa / d.de) – An unhappy Alexandra Popp, Germany’s record goalscorer, struggled to find explanations for the biggest embarrassment in the history of German women’s football. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet. It’s a brutal blow for me,” said the captain of the women’s national football team. The Germans were eliminated from the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand after a 1-1 draw against the supposedly inferior team from South Korea. The team under coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg went into the tournament with high aspirations, with many even hoping to come away with the title.
Having started out so well with a 6-0 win over Morocco, the German team felt a bitter sense of disappointment and dismay – as did the many fans, both on site and at home. Several of the players shed tears and consoled each other while they were still on the pitch. Their feelings were no doubt similar to those of the Brazilian women with superstar Marta – another team that was surprisingly eliminated in the preliminary round. Tears were shed for co-hosts New Zealand as well – for them, too, the World Cup is over even though it is barely underway.
