Ulaanbaatar (dpa) – Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender are visiting Mongolia to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Germany and the East Asian country. The two countries are looking to seal a strategic partnership during the state visit. A delegation of cultural representatives is accompanying Steinmeier on the two-day trip.
Germany and Mongolia already work closely together – for example on archaeological excavations in Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, and also in the area of raw materials and international peacekeeping. Around one percent of the population speaks German. With a surface area of 1.5 million square kilometres, Mongolia is approximately four times the size of Germany, but it only has a population of some 3.3 million.
