Berlin (dpa) – Germany is officially bidding for the 2040 Olympic and Paralympic Games – to be held 50 years after German reunification. On the sidelines of the Olympic Games at the German House in Paris, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser signed the joint memorandum of understanding supporting a German bid for the 2040 Olympics. “We want another home fixture for our German athletes,” said Faeser. The Federal Government is unanimously in favour of the bid, said the Minister, adding that it had been agreed on together with the German Olympic Committee and the cities of Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Leipzig and Munich as well as the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria.
The German triathlon mixed relay team won the gold medal in a thrilling contest on Monday, while rower Oliver Zeidler won the final in impressive style at the weekend. Gold also went to the dressage riders from Germany in both the individual and team competitions.
