Berlin (dpa / d.de) – According to press reports, Germany is planning to double its current military aid to Ukraine from four to eight billion euros in 2024. In a TV interview, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the increase would send out “a powerful signal to Ukraine that we will not abandon them”. As such, he confirmed the reports without specifying amounts or providing further details. The governing coalition has to decide on the increase in its budget discussions before the plans are approved by the Bundestag Budget Committee. The latter is due to convene on Thursday for a meeting to determine the final expenditure for 2024.
On Monday, the foreign ministers of the 27 EU member states will also be meeting in Brussels to discuss further aid for Ukraine. The situation in the Middle East will likewise be on the agenda. Germany will be represented in Brussels by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
