Nairobi (d.de/dpa) – For the first African Climate Summit, Germany has pledged additional support for African countries with a particular focus on the energy transition. “Africa is a continent of opportunities, particularly in the area of the energy transition and expanding renewable energy,” said Jennifer Morgan, Secretary of State and Special Commissioner for International Climate Policy at the Federal Foreign Office. Morgan said that Germany was working closely with Kenya and many other African states to make the most of the opportunities of the transformation.
Parliamentary Secretary of State at the Development Ministry Bärbel Kofler stressed that climate action was “particularly successful when we work together on it”. She pointed out the fact that the Federal Government had decided not to start any new German initiatives at the summit, but was focusing on “vigorous support for African initiatives” instead. After all, she said, Africa was not just feeling the effects of climate change, as the continent also had a lot to offer “in terms of concrete solutions”.
Kofler and Morgan are representing Germany at the first African Climate Summit in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. During the three-day meeting of senior figures, African countries are aiming to shift the focus onto global financing for climate protection projects on the continent. The agenda also includes discussions of renewable energy and the range of mineral resources which are important for the energy transition. Kenya’s President William Ruto and the African Union are hosting the summit, with African heads of state and representatives of the UN, international governments, private businesses and NGOs expected to attend.
