Berlin (d.de) – Berlin (dpa) – The Federal Government has decided to introduce a new basic child allowance. The SPD, Greens and FDP previously agreed on this in the coalition agreement as an additional element in the German welfare state. The basic child allowance clusters and expands previous benefits for children, including child benefit, children’s benefits from the citizen’s income, and the child supplement. What is more, access is to be simplified by making the benefits system clearer and through the use of a central platform. “There will be only one point of contact for all child benefit payments in future,” says the paper. The government calls the plan a “fresh start in the area of family support”, including some elements that are income-related and others that are not.
In 2025, the year in which basic child allowance is to be launched, it is estimated to incur additional costs of some 2.4 billion euros. According to the government, costs could rise to up to 6 billion euros in subsequent years if benefit take-up increases.
