Hamburg (dpa) – The German government sees Germany as a pioneer when it comes to the goal of climate-neutral aviation in just a few years’ time. At the National Aviation Conference in Hamburg, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the aviation sector would change fundamentally. “Our big goal is clear: we want to become climate-neutral by 2045.” He added that aviation was responsible for just under 3 percent of global CO2 emissions. “It is clear that this should become even less.” Scholz went on to say that the German aviation industry was already a world leader in climate-friendly technologies, explaining that climate-neutral aviation should not come at the expense of European and German airports and airlines. He also said that hydrogen propulsion would certainly be possible in series-produced aircraft in the longer term, and that to this end the German government wanted to speed up the development of its hydrogen infrastructure.
German Transport Minister Volker Wissing said: “We are supporting our aviation companies and airports in their efforts to become pioneers in reducing greenhouse gases.” Climate protection technologies are the key to international success in aviation, explained German Economics Minister Robert Habeck: “Today, no aircraft in the world flies without parts from Germany.” Habeck continued: “The idea that we would protect the climate and have no aviation is naive. That won’t happen.”
