Manila, Sep 10 (dpa) – World Champions! The German basketball team completed a perfect tournament in Manila today with a historic first World Cup title that crowned an entire generation after beating Serbia 83-77 (47-47).
Captain Dennis Schröder and his team won a thrilling final to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the history of German sport.
The team led by Schröder (28 points) and the young star, the always offensive Franz Wagner (19 points), won the heated duel against former German national team and current Serbian coach Svetislav Pesic.
The gold cup in Manila is the second most important international title for Germany after the European Championships in 1993. Not even the generation around retired German basketball icon Dirk Nowitzki had achieved such success.
After eight victories in eight games, the golden trophy will remain in Germany’s hands for the next four years until the World Cup in Qatar 2027.
