Manila (dpa) – German basketball team enjoys great success: For the first time in 21 years, the national team has reached the semi-finals of a world championship tournament. The team coached by Gordon Herbert narrowly beat Latvia 81:79 in Manila and is now set to play the favourite, the USA. Captain Dennis Schröder and his teammates, who are the only team to remain unbeaten in the tournament so far, will play star coach Steve Kerr’s Olympic-winning squad on Friday in a battle to enter their first World Cup final.
By reaching the semi-finals, the German basketball team has automatically qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Germany and Serbia, which have both made it to the World Cup semi-finals, are the European teams that will definitely take part in the Olympics without having to qualify via another tournament. “This is a great achievement by the team. The players have earned themselves great respect, it is really highly deserved,” said head coach Herbert.
