Glasgow’s favourite busker hits South London – South London News

Glasgow born busker and songwriter, Murdo Mitchell, is visiting South London as part of a UK wide tour.

Mr Mitchell will perform at the Omeara in O’meara Street, next to Borough Market on March 29.

Aged 11, Mr Mitchell began his music career with the help of his dad’s punk albums and a guitar and amp he snagged for £75 at Glasgow’s Barras Market.

Teaching himself three chords, he hit Glasgow’s streets, busking Kings of Leon’s Use Somebody for three hours. In his first session he pocketed £50 – sharing £20 with his sister.

After his first taste at performing, Mr Mitchell supported friends on shows and tours across the UK until he could rent his own studio in Tileyard Road, Kings Cross.

Imbued by a chip-on-his-shoulder, and honed by the busking years, Mr Mitchell’s live shows set him apart from the noise.

He said: “My strengths are my rhythm guitar, my acoustic playing, like a kind of troubadour just giving a performance.”

Mr Mitchel even enjoyed a mentorship with Scottish folk legend, Donovan. In an interview with The Herald, the icon said: “He has what I had at his age, the hunger to communicate.”

The collaboration culminated in a performance at the Duke of Edinburgh Award which Mr Mitchell described as a “dream-come-true moment”.

Last year Mr Mitchell embarked on his first headline UK tour, which included sell-out performances at St. Pancras Church and The Courtyard Theatre.

Now, 2024 looks to be his biggest year yet, starting with a string of headline dates including the Omeara, and a homecoming show at the iconic King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow.
