Former NBA player Glen Davis is not impressed with what he saw out of Victor Wenbanyama’s two Summer League games. In fact, he asserts that the French wunderkind wouldn’t have been able to handle the “pain” he’d exert on offense.
While speaking with the Washington Post’s Ben Golliver, Davis was asked how he’d fare against Wembanyama. Initially, he admitted that he would struggle with the 19-year-old’s incredible length. However, Davis then emphasized that Wembanyama has no answer for his strength. The NBA champion referred to the Spurs rookie as “a little baby giraffe,” and said he’s “soft.”
“The length I probably would have struggled with, but the body? Tomato chest,” Davis said. “They soft. That boy looked like a little baby Bambi out there the other night, a little baby giraffe walking around. I don’t think he could handle all this pain. I definitely would’ve used my body against that boy.”
For context, Wembanyama is slated at 7’4” and 237 pounds. Although, many surmise that he weighs far less. His agent, Bouna Ndiaye, recently told NBA insider Marc J. Spears that adding weight would be a “big mistake.”
“We’re going to fight to not put weight on his body,” Ndiaye said. “Weight on his body [is] a big mistake. We focus on strength, core. We were very pleased that he linked up [with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar] who played until [41] years old. That’s the path that we want to take.”
Davis, during his prime, weighed 289 pounds and stood at 6’9”.
