Kenyans have atleast one month to replace their old passports with the new East African Community e-passport.
In a statement released on Thursday, September 22, Immigration Director-General Alexander Muteshi stated that Kenyans have until the end of November 2022 to replace their passports.
“Pursuant to the decision by EAC Council of Minister’s held in Arusha from November 22 to 29, 2021, the deadline for phasing out of the old generation passport for EAC Member States is November 2022,” read the statement in part.
Muteshi called upon Kenyans to heed to the call and have their passports replaced with biometric ones.
“Kenyans are therefore hereby advised to acquire the new Biometric e-passport to avoid any inconveniences,” he said.
Migrate fully
The DG further stated that the country would completely transition to the biometric e-passport by 30th November 2022.

“In line with this decision, the Directorate of Immigration Services wishes to inform the general public that Kenya is bound to migrate fully to the new East African Community biometric e-passport by 30th November 2022,” he added.
The new-generation e-passports have a microchip containing biometric data about the holder, which is also contained in the passport booklet.
Its secure nature helps to curb reproduction and tampering at the same time enhancing imposter detection.
