- RadioConnect pilot & Citizen Labs to anchor Malaysia’s push towards an AI-driven public sector
- Government Innovation Initiative to translate public sector challenges into deployable AI solutions
In a move to strengthen digital governance, the Ministry of Digital is activating the Government Innovation Initiative (GII), a strategic national effort aimed at driving innovation across the public sector and advancing Malaysia’s commitment to achieving AI Nation status by 2030.
In a statement, the ministry said GII is designed to move beyond conceptual innovation into measurable delivery. The initiative translates real government and citizen problem statements into deployable solutions, prioritising Made-by-Malaysia technologies, strengthening the domestic AI ecosystem, and enabling local AI and digital producers to scale nationally and globally.
In line with this, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), under the direction of the Ministry of Digital and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, delivered a flagship GII pilot called the RadioConnect initiative across three public hospitals.
RadioConnect aims to provide cloud-based connectivity with secure, multi-provider access nationwide through each hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System.
The initiative is designed to streamline the secure storage, retrieval, and sharing of diagnostic images such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans, enabling authorised doctors to access patient images across departments and hospitals, improving diagnostic efficiency and patient care.
The next step for GII involves the establishment of Citizen Labs, a collaborative platform for the public to submit problem statements and experiences, which will be channelled directly to relevant ministries to develop appropriate solutions for the rakyat.
Central to this effort is the MyInovasi portal (myinovasi.gov.my), Malaysia’s platform for building a national innovation ecosystem. The pilot initiative, led by the Ministry of Digital and its agencies, connects government, academia, and industry to match local innovations with real-world needs.
As part of this whole-of-government approach, the Ministry of Digital is aligning key national innovation assets under a unified ecosystem. In support of GII’s objectives, Futurise Sdn Bhd will transition to operate under MDEC, where it will continue advancing GII projects through the National Regulatory Sandbox framework.
“The Government Innovation Initiative is not just about adopting new technology, but about building a responsive, efficient public sector rooted in local ingenuity,” said Digital minister Gobind Singh Deo (pic).
“Through GII, we are breaking down silos and aligning our national innovation assets under a cohesive ecosystem. With Citizen Labs, we are creating a direct pipeline where the rakyat’s challenges meet Malaysian-made AI solutions, accelerating our transformation into a leading digital nation by 2030,” he added.
