New York (dpa) – 50 years after Germany joined the United Nations, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has highlighted the country’s engagement in the global organisation. “Germany has risen from its past and become a champion of the United Nations’ Charter, of multilateral solutions, of respect for international law and of the promotion of peace and security, human rights, sustainable development and climate protection,” Guterres told the German Press Agency. “We count on Germany as an important partner in our global efforts to build a fairer and more peaceful future for all humankind.”
On 18 September 1973, the Federal Republic of Germany and the then German Democratic Republic (GDR) were elected into the organisation as official members by the UN General Assembly. The United Nations had been founded in 1945 following the end of the Second World War. When Germany reunified in 1990, its dual membership came to an end. Ever since, Germany has been assuming ever more responsibility. Germany is now the second-biggest contributor to the UN system as a whole and the second-biggest bilateral donor of humanitarian aid.
