MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Texas sophomore Hailey Hernandez landed the top finish by an American diver to secure the 1-meter springboard national title and junior Bridget O’Neil posted the second-best American score to secure silver on Friday at the USA Diving Winter National Championships at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.
Hernandez scored 510.60 points in the 1-meter preliminary and final, the second-highest total of the competition, but as the event’s top American finisher she was credited with the U.S. national title.
O’Neil’s, who placed fifth in the prelims, joined Hernandez on the podium with a total score of 489.60 points, the third-best score of the day and earned silver with the second-highest American score.
On the men’s side, freshman Nick Harris finished 15th in the 3-meter preliminary round with 316.15 points, while senior Andrew Harness scored 307.55 points to finish 20th and sophomore Manuel Borowski placed 27th with 284.65 points.
The USA Diving Winter National Championships continue on Saturday with the women’s 3-meter springboard and the men’s 10-meter platform. Hernandez, O’Neil, Sarah Carruthers and Jordan Skilken are set to compete for the women and Harness will dive for the men.
Competition begins at 9 a.m. CT, with finals set to start at 3 p.m. CT.
