Leuven (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): Hidden cameras found at scout camps in Liege prompting police investigations into privacy violations and safety concerns among young scouts.
At a camp in Liège where a group of scouts from Leuven were having a summer camp they found a hidden camera. This is a big problem because it invades people’s privacy. The local authorities are now investigating to make sure everyone at the camp is safe and to address this serious breach of privacy.BAt another camp this summer they found hidden cameras again which is really worrying for safety and privacy. The police are trying to find out who did this and stop it from happening again.
What is the impact of hidden cameras found at Belgian scout camps on privacy and safety concerns?
During the scout camp in Lierneux, Liège, a small camera was discovered hidden on one of the hudos which are homemade open-air toilets used at the campsite. The camera was equipped with an SD card and connected to a power bank allowing for extended recording periods. This setup enabled the camera to capture footage over a significant duration leading to serious concerns about privacy violations. The police are quickly looking into who put the camera there and what they were doing. It has been said that this is a big problem with safety and privacy at camps so they need to make things safer for everyone there.
Jan Van Reusel from Scouts en Gidsen Vlaanderen confirmed that a 16-year-old scout placed the camera there. The boy was sent home immediately and his parents were called to pick him up. The police were also told about what happened. They need to investigate more to understand the whole situation why it happened and what will happen next.
Last Friday a scout camp of the Niewpoort sea scouts was also ended early in Beringen because a hidden camera was found in the showers. The police are investigating there too. It’s not clear yet if it was a scout member a leader, or someone else who put the camera there. In Leuven Jan Van Reusel mentioned that there are two incidents but it’s too early to say it’s a trend. They need to figure out if it was done on purpose by adults or just a bad joke by a 16-year-old. Either way it’s not acceptable. Each scout group in Scouts en Gidsen Vlaanderen decides their phone and camera rules at camp but they recommend staying disconnected and respecting privacy. It has been said that filming in private areas like toilets or showers is never okay and people should understand that.
