I woke up this morning feeling a sense of doom in the world. I feel that I do not even know the country that I live in any longer. As someone that travels throughout the world and tries to make connections with the people and wildlife that I come across, it was incredible that America elected someone like Donald Trump. It is incredible that people would vote against their own best interest and seem to be happy about it. It is incredible how many racist, misogynistic and uneducated people there are in America.
There are many reasons why I feel this way. Not the least is that America has elected someone that does not respect the rule of law. America elected a convicted rapist. A person that states that he will put Social Security in danger. A person that states that he will repeal Obamacare throwing millions of people off of healthcare. A person, after the election, stated that he will follow Project 2025 – a fascist manifesto.
Trump is a person that does not respect women, unions, immigrants, nature, the LGBTQ community, wildlife and norms of society. He is a person that does not believe in climate change or anything that he cannot make a dollar from. He is a person that is an embarrassment around the world with the way he acts, like a child whining about everyone and everything. He makes up childish names for people. He has stated that he will us the US Military against US citizens. He has publicly stated that Elon Musk, a South African that was once an illegal alien, will be put in charge of large parts of our economy and institutions and that conspiracy theorist Robert Kennedy, Jr. in charge of public health. I could go on, but you get the idea.
But for this blog post I chose to include why he is bad for people that travel, respect others, and the world at large:
Conservation and Travel
In today’s world, where every choice we make carries weight, the decision regarding our leadership is crucial, especially for those of us who cherish travel and the natural beauty of our planet. As we wander through vibrant cities, serene landscapes, and breathtaking national parks, we become acutely aware of the urgency of conservation. We understand that the environment is not just a backdrop to our adventures; it is a vital part of our well-being and future. This makes it increasingly clear why Donald Trump represents the wrong choice as president for travelers and conservationists alike.
During his tenure, Trump displayed a troubling disregard for environmental protections that are essential for preserving the very places we explore. From rolling back regulations that safeguard clean air and water to attempting to open pristine national parks to drilling and mining, his policies prioritize short-term economic gain over the long-term health of our ecosystems. For travelers, this isn’t just a political issue; it’s a matter of losing the natural wonders that draw us to new destinations and enrich our experiences.
Moreover, Trump’s administration actively undermined international agreements aimed at combating climate change, dismissing the urgent call to protect our planet for future generations. As travelers, we must recognize that climate change threatens the diversity of landscapes and cultures we so deeply value. Rising sea levels, extreme weather, and shifting ecosystems can permanently alter the destinations we love, making it imperative that we support leaders who prioritize sustainable practices and global cooperation.
Consider also the impact of policy on the communities we visit. Tourist locations often rely on the beauty of their natural surroundings for economic stability. Policies that neglect conservation not only endanger wildlife but also threaten the livelihoods of local populations dependent on eco-tourism. By supporting candidates who embrace environmental stewardship, we advocate for the health of the planet and the prosperity of the communities we explore.
Travel is about connection—between peoples, cultures, and the environment. By choosing leaders who understand and prioritize the delicate balance of this connection, we ensure that our journeys contribute positively to the world around us. As we wake up to a country that feels unfamiliar, we must remind ourselves of our shared responsibility to protect the splendor of our planet. The choice was clear: we deserve leaders who align with our values of conservation, sustainability, and respect for the amazing places we travel to and the people who call them home. Unfortunately, we did not make that clear choice.
It is clear that America has failed the world.
Europe and the rest of the World
The impact of Donald Trump on Europe and the rest of the world has been a topic of significant debate and concern. His administration was marked by a series of policies and statements that often alienated allies and strained international relationships. One of the most prominent issues was his approach to multilateralism. Trump’s preference for bilateral agreements often undermined established alliances such as NATO and the European Union, leading to uncertainty about America’s commitment to global partnerships.
Moreover, Trump’s stance on climate change posed a serious threat to international efforts aimed at combating this critical issue. By withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, he sent a message that the United States would not actively participate in global initiatives designed to mitigate environmental degradation. This decision not only hindered progress but also diminished the collective motivation of other nations to commit to their environmental responsibilities.
Trade policies under Trump also had far-reaching consequences. His imposition of tariffs and trade wars, particularly with China and Europe, created economic instability. These actions disrupted supply chains and increased prices for consumers, while also straining relationships with key trading partners. The ripple effects of such policies were felt beyond American borders, affecting economies worldwide and complicating international trade dynamics.
In addition, Trump’s rhetoric often exacerbated tensions across the globe. His approach to diplomacy was characterized by confrontation rather than cooperation. This created a polarized atmosphere that made it difficult for nations to work together on pressing global challenges, from security threats to public health crises.
Furthermore, the rise of nationalism fueled by Trump’s presidency had profound implications. His populist messages resonated with certain segments of the population, leading to a revival of isolationist sentiments in various countries. This shift threatened the collaborative spirit that is essential for addressing global issues and fostering peace.
Donald Trump’s presidency not only impacted the internal dynamics of the United States but also left a tangible mark on Europe and the rest of the world. His administration’s policies and approach to international relations have created challenges that require careful navigation. As the world seeks to address complex issues, the importance of unity and collaboration remains paramount. With Donal Trump that is impossible.
As of January of next year, the world will be different. Less safe. Less stable. And America will not be the leader any longer.
There will come a time that each person will have to answer for supporting this person to your children and grandchildren. And when one of them asks why would you support such a person. A person that has destroyed NATO. That has allowed Ukraine to be overtaken. That has allowed drilling on Federal Lands. I suppose that the answer will be that they will say we thought that eggs would be cheaper.
Immigrants
The topic of Donald Trump and immigration has been a point of intense discussion and debate throughout his political career. Trump’s approach to immigration has often been characterized by a focus on national security and economic stability. Supporters argue that his policies aimed to protect American jobs and ensure safer borders, while critics contend that they foster divisiveness and fear.
During his presidency, Trump implemented measures such as the travel ban targeting certain countries and the push for a border wall with Mexico. These actions ignited strong reactions from various communities, especially among immigrants and their advocates who felt targeted and marginalized by the rhetoric surrounding immigration policies. This era saw a rise in activism as individuals and organizations rallied for more inclusive and humane immigration laws.
The dialogues around Trump’s policies on immigration also brought to light the contributions of immigrants to American society. Many pointed out that immigrants play vital roles in the economy, culture, and workforce. The narrative surrounding immigrants shifted in response to the stark contrasts presented during Trump’s presidency, showcasing stories of resilience, aspiration, and the pursuit of the American Dream.
As we reflect on this complex and multifaceted topic, it is essential to consider the human stories behind the policies. Understanding the emotions and experiences of those affected can bridge gaps in conversations about immigration, allowing for a more nuanced view that goes beyond political slogans. As the country continues to navigate its identity and values regarding immigration, it remains crucial to engage in discussions that acknowledge the rich tapestry of backgrounds and experiences that immigrants contribute to American life.
It does though appear that with this election, those nuanced discussions are over. Immigrants are trash. They eat the dogs. They eat the cats. They are to be rounded up and deported. How dare they try to better their families. I am so tired hearing that they should just come in legally. That is such a cop out. Most of us would not be here if there were immigration rules in the early 1900s. And when all of the non-documented immigrants are gone, who will pick the strawberries? Who will build the houses? Who will work in the restaurants? Who is going to make up the tremendous amount of taxes that they pay but never get any benefits from? I dare say not the people that voted for Trump.
Some of my best friends are immigrants – legal and undocumented. Some of the hardest working people I know were at one time undocumented.
My Final Word
Make America Great Again. That is the slogan. I aways thought America was great and that he was just noise. I now don’t believe it. America turned out to be petty, racist, misogynistic, isolationistic, and not ready to face reality relative to climate change, immigration and immigrants and our place in the world. It was sad to find this out.
This will be my last blog post. At least for a while. All I have to say is that people better buckle up. Get ready. Fascism is coming in a big way. The first steps planned with firing thousands of government workers and hiring only MAGA people, rounding up undocumented workers throughout the country (and the people that voted for Trump that have undocumented relatives, this is what you wanted). Also, less healthcare, less environmental protections, less standing in the world, less education, and less human rights.
Oh, and the tariffs? Well, I lived under a fascist dictator for about 5 years that also thought tariffs would work. Those policies caused hyperinflation and shortages throughout the country.
Ukraine will not be supported and neither will the Palestinian people. Vladimir Putin will be along with his best friend Kim Jung Un from North Korea. Europe will be discarded so we will have to see what Putin wants after getting Ukraine. There will be drilling in the Arctic and even near the Grand Canyon even though this won’t make gas any cheaper and the US is already the largest producer of oil in the world. The supreme court will just continue to be a rubber stamp throughout the rest of my lifetime.
We had a chance to turn the page. We had a chance to see a brighter future for our children and grandchildren. We had a chance to be the shining city on the hill.
And America blew it.
But hey, eggs might be cheaper.
