India vs South Africa 2nd ODI Live Score: Bumrah dismisses Malan, breaks 80-run stand

South Africa 214/3 in 35.4 overs

Bowled! Off-cutter, on length, gets a bit of inside edge and rattles against the middle stump. Malan departs for 91, nevertheless his teammates give him a standing ovation. Aiden Markram walks in next.

South Africa 212/2 in 34.4 overs

A slower delivery from Thakur, placed outside off was cut away by Malan through point for a boundary as South Africa went past 200 in the run chase. Bavuma joined the action as well as he smashed the fourth ball in that over for a boundary towards long-on. And then again, towards third man.

South Africa 211/1 in 34 overs

He welcomed Chahal with a boundary via reverse sweep through deep point in the 31st over and then pulled the first delivery of the next over, from Thakur, through fine leg for another boundary. He is now into his 80s. The chase has now reduced to double figures for SA.

Despite de Kock’s dismissal, South Africa have remained in control of the chase of 288 with Malan nearing his century. South Africa need 108 runs more in the remaining 20 overs to win the series.

A cross-seam delivbery on length and Malan shot-arm jabbed it over mid-wicket for a boundary. He then dished out a cutter that gripped on the surface before Bavuma chipped it away towards the off side. Fortunately for him, the ball landed a little far away from the fielder stationed at mid-off.

South Africa 160/1 in 26 overs

For the first time in this series, Iyer is brought into the attack. He should have bowled in the first match as well. Raised a lot of eyebrows when he didn’t with veterans and analysts questioning his role in the team. Concedes three singles in his first over. 

South Africa 145/1 in 24 overs

That was stone-dead lbw. Wonder why the umpire had denied it in the first place. Pant had the loudest appeal and KL Rahul asked for a review. Was in line, hits the pads in line with the stumps and De Kock departed for 78. A huge, huge relief for India. 

South Africa 132/1 in 22 overs

After De Kock, Malan too scores his half-century, off 64 deliveries. He hit four boundaries during his knock. Malan may not have hit as many boundaries as De Kock, but has perfectly assisted the wicketkeeper-batsman in their 130-run stand.

Shuffled across the crease against Thakur who went wide outside off, and slogged it over square leg for a boundary. Incredible hitting from De Kock! He is indeed controlling this entire chase.

South Africa 116/0 in 18 overs.

It is their second as a pair, their previous being in July 2021 against Ireland in Dublin. Overall, de Kock has been involved in 17 century stands as an opener. Only Gibbs (19) and Graeme Smith (22) have been involved in more such partnerships than De Kock. This is also South Africa’s first century opening stand against India since the 194-run stand in Durban in 2013 between Amla and De Kock.

Malan has joined the party as well, as he has already scored four boundaries as South Africa have crossed the 100-run mark in only the 16th over of the match. Superb batting from the two batters! India are in dire need to break this partnership.

Since the start of 2020, India have played 17 ODI matches where the bowling attack has picked only nine wickets between overs 1 and 10, averaging 112.78. No other team during this period has recorded a triple-digit average. Three of their premier pacers have all struggled with the new ball during this phase. Bhuvneshwar averages 64.50 with two wickets, Shami averages 75.50 with as many wickets while Bumrah has managed only one wickets at 192.

South Africa 93/0 in 15 overs

In just 36 deliveries, De Kock has reached his half-century, his 27th in the format. He hit six boundaries and two sixes to reach to the mark. He certainly has been the aggressor in this 74*-run opening stand.

Superb delivery from Chahal, beats the outside edge on the drive and goes directly into the hands of Pant who click the bails off in a fraction of a second. Erasmus goes upstairs for stumping review and it shows his backfoot was inside the crease at the time of stumping.

South Africa 72/0 in 11 overs

India had scored 57/0 today in the powerplay. South Africa bettered it with their score of 66/0. India have once again failed to pick a powerplay wicket, one which has troubled them since the last ODI World Cup.

Pant is the first one to appeal, although it was more of a question raised to his captain, urging him to go for a review. Floated delivery from Ashwin, Malan failed to execute the reverse sweep as it hits his pads. However, review shows that the ball was outside the line of impact and India lost the review.

South Africa 66/0 in 10 overs.

Pant missed a huge opportunity of stumping De Kock. Was a regulation stumping. And the next ball, he hits a six over deep backward square leg against Ashwin. Malan too joins in with his first boundary in the game with a reverse sweep against the offie.

South Africa 52/0 in 8 overs

Ashwin gets the first maiden over in the match. Crucial for India amid De Kock’s 23-ball 31*. Meanwhile, Malan remains on 6* off 13.

South Africa 38/0 in 6 overs

KL Rahul introduced Ashwin in the 4th over itself and De Kock managed to hit the offie for a boundary through covers in the fourth ball. 6 runs came off the over.

South Africa 34/0 in 4 overs

He shimmied down the track to smash Bhuvneshwar for a boundary in his third delivery before pulling the shorter one over backward square leg for a six. De Kock eventually ended the over with a boundary. Poor start from Bhuvneshwar and India immediately find themselves under pressure.

Overpitched delivery from Bumrah, angled across to De Kock and he hammered it through cover for a boundary.

South Africa 7/0 in 1 over

South African openers Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan make their way to the middle. The hosts need 288 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match contest and win the series. Jasprit Bumrah will open the attack for India.

Shardul Thakur’s unbeaten 40 after KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant’s contrasting half-century scores helped India finish with 287/6 in 50 overs

Ashwin shimmied out of the crease to take on Shamsi’s tossed up delivery, sending it towards the long-on fence. David Miller made a brilliant run in the deep, made a full-length dive, grabbed the ball in the air, but it slipped out of his hands on landing on the ground. Shamsi was disappointed and so was Miller.

Went on his backfoot to loft the delivery from Shamsi over extra cover for a boundary. That was an absolute delight from Thakur. A few deliveries later, he smashed a six against Maharaj, over deep mid-wicket fence.

Rishabh Pant was dismissed in similar fashion in the first game and the combination of Phehlukwayo and de Kock pulled off the same today, against Venkatesh Iyer as he departed for 22. And how quick was de Kock! The back foot was in the air, just one millimetre above the ground when the bails went red. Superb stumping! India 239/6 in 43.5 overs

Another slow ball from Phehlukwayo, overpitched as well as Thakur hammered it past the bowler for a a boundary.

Slower delivery from Phehlukwayo which was right in Thakur’s slot and he goes big, sending it high and over deep mid-wicket boundary for a six. It is India’s third six in the match, the two two were hit by Pant.

Change in pace from Ngidi as Venkatesh Iyer stepped out, leaned forward to send the ball over the covers. But it didn’t take the perfect height as Rassie van der Dussen leapt high, stretched out with both hands to grab it, but failed. Venky dropped on 14.

India 217/5 in 40 overs

Tossed up delivery from Shamsi, around off as it beat the inside edge of the bat to strike the Shreyas’ pads. Shamsi appealed, but the umpired denied and SA opted for the review. The ball tracking showed that the ball was in line and hit the pads in line with the middle. India lost their fifth wicket as Shreyas Iyer walked back scoring just 11 off 14.

India 207/5 in 37 overs.

Venkatesh makes most of the free hit to smash a huge six against Magala, sending the ball downtown. That brings the 200 for India.

Since the dismissal of Pant, the two Iyers – Shreyas and Venkatesh – have scored only 11 in 21 balls. India 196/4 in 36 overs. Can they go past 250 today?

The lost Dhawan and Kohli successively after an impressive 63-run stand, which was followed by a century stand between Pant and Rahul. South Africa fought back once again with successive wickets of both the batters leaving India 4 down. Shamsi go the big one, dismissing Pant for 85. India are 186/4 in 33 overs

He did have a poor start to what is his second ODI appearance, but returning from the small break, South Africa had the crucial breakthrough and it was Magala to provided it, dismissing KL Rahul for 55.

India 179/3 in 31.1 overs

Begins the 31st over with a six against Phehlukwayo sent downtown. He is into his 80s. This is also his highest ODI score going past his 78 against England last March in Pune. He is single-handedly controlling the proceedings for India now.

Rahul, who was dropped on 8 and 46, has reached his half-century score in 71 deliveries and has also stitched a 100-run partnership with Rishabh Pant that has perfectly helped India fight back.

India 167/2 in 29 overs

In his third over in the game, Pant rocked back to smash Shamsi over deep mid-wicket for a boundary and then hit a one-handed six against the leggie. He had earlier hit four boundaries against him in the match.

India 162/2 in 28 overs

He is doing what he used to do for Punjab Kings in IPL – drop anchor to solve middle-order issues. It has been the reason behind India’s loss in Paarl two days back. And so he has dropped anchor today allowing Dhawan and then Pant to flourish at the other end. He also been dropped by Markram at backward point for 46, the second time in this match.

It takes him 43 deliveries to reach his fourth half-century score in ODIs. Incidentally, all four came while India batted first in an ODI innings

Tabraiz Shamsi is brought into the attack for the first time by Bavuma and Pant welcomes him with back-to-back boundaries – one slogged over mid-wicket and the other swept through deep square leg. A delivery later, he cut the widish one to third man for a third boundary.

India 133/2 in 24 overs

When India had lost Rahul early in the previous game, a 92-run stand from Dhawan and Kohli helped India revive despite the loss that followed. India today started with a 63-run opening stand before losing two quick wickets which included the dismissal of Virat Kohli for a duck. India, however, revived on the back of a half-century stand between Pant and Rahul, who now nears his half-century.

India 115/2 in 22 overs

A single down to long-on from Pant and India reach the 100-run mark in 19.1 overs. The visitors had reached the mark in 18.2 overs in the previous game for the loss of just one wicket.

The first six of the game comes up and it is Pant with the big swing that sends the ball roaring into the sky and over the deep mid-wicket fence. Gets down on one knee to slog that delivery from Maharaj with all his might.

India 83/2 in 17 overs

Pant fended the delivery from Maharaj towards mid-wicket. He had already stepped out of the crease while Rahul was more than halfway down the track. But the fielder collected the ball in time leaving Pant top abort the single, but Rahul was already on his way to the other end and had almost reached the crease. With a real run-out chance in hand, the fielder had thrown the ball to Maharaj, but he failed to collect it properly. And adding to their woe, Phehlukwayo was a poor back-up as well. Rahul got time to return to his position, but was absolutely livid with Pant.

Tossed up delivery from Maharaj and Kohli looked to go over the fielder at cover, but the ball probably came slow onto the bat and failed to make a good contact as it landed straight into the hands of Bavuma. India lose two wickets in quick time after such an impressive powerplay. This was the 14th time he has been dismissed for a duck in ODIs, first time since December 2019 and first time by a spinner.

South Africa stuck with spin after the powerplay and it has resulted in that much-needed wicket. Dhawan slog swept it hard only to find Magala in the deep. Markram provides South Africa with the big breakthrough as Dhawan departs for 29.

India 63/1 in 11.4 overs

India finish with 57 for no loss with Rahul on 21* and Dhawan on 25*. India have hit six boundaries during this period while the hosts have conceded 11 extras. The score has been an improvement from the previous game where India managed 55/1 in the powerplay while South Africa had scored 39/1 in the first innings.

India have made a steady start in the second ODI. The openers have kept things ticking along with boundaries and singles, leaving Bavuma and Sputh Africa frustrated. The pair have also stitched their 50-run partnership. They have managed 46 in the previous match before Markram had dismissed Rahul. 

Aiden Markram into the attack. He had dismissed the Indian captain early in the last game and South Africa will be hoping for the same. Excellent start from the right-arm off-spinner, just four singles in his first over.

India 49/0 in 8 overs

Very poor start from Magala. The ball just slipped out of his hands, went well wide of the leg stump, past the wicketkeeper’s reach and raced away towards the boundary. 9 off the over. Magala has already conceded 29 runs in the match and India have scored 42 for no loss in 6 overs.

Ngidi delivers a shortish ball, just outside off as Rahul cuts it which sends the ball to Malan at gully, but he drops the opportunity. Should have gone with both hands. Dhawan sent the next delivery roaring through extra cover for a boundary. 

India 33/0 in 5 overs

Short and wide from Magala and Rahul cut it elegantly through backward point for his first boundary. Magala concedes 5 runs in his second over.

India 26/0 in 4 overs

Ngidi gave him the width and Dhawan pounced on it to smash it through the covers for his third boundary in the game. He had scored 79 off 84 in the opener in Paarl.

India 21/0 in 3 overs

Magal, who is only playing his second ODI for South Africa, had a nervy start. Dhawan ended his over with yet another boundary flicked off the pads, through square leg this time, for a boundary.

India 16/0 in 2 overs

Magala in his first over, swung the ball into the pads of Dhawan and the left-handed batter flicked it off his pads to send the ball through mid-wicket for a boundary.

“One change for us. Sisanda comes in for Jansen. Marco had a big workload in the Test series, and felt he was a bit flat in the first game, we got full confidence in Magala and that’s the reason behind the change.”

“We probably wanted to bat first, like KL said it’s quite straightforward with the nature of the wicket. I think there will be opportunity in the first hour with the ball swinging and nipping a bit, if we can take a couple of wickets and put them under pressure. I wouldn’t say it was a perfect game (first ODI), but I will take that result. It’s just to get better from last game and try and find a way to improve and we have a better understanding of the wicket and what type of skills that we need, so just make sure we are on point in terms of that. We gonna have to do the basics well.”

“I think it’s pretty straightforward, second game on the same strip and important to put runs on the board and guessing the wicket will get slower later on. In the middle overs we couldn’t get the partnerships going and that’s the learning from the last game, hopefully we can go out there today and show better performance. The batters themselves realized that’s where it went wrong, we will learn from it and we have spoken about it. We are playing the same team.”

India won the toss and opted to bat first against South Africa

India’s middle-order collapse in the last game was considered a primary reason behind the defeat in Paarl. However, in the period between January 2021 and the start of the previous game, India’s middle order averaged 44, only behind New Zealand in ODIs. The key batter behind that number has been KL Rahul who scored 453 runs in 10 innings at 56.7 and a strike rate of 114 with four fifties and one century during that period, but took the responsibility to open in Rohit’s absence in the series opener. 

“Our thought process is that we are building a team for the 2023 World Cup. So there are going to be a few hiccups here and there. But we all have good clarity that we have got this bunch of players and how we have to refine them. It doesn’t matter if we lose an odd game while trying to do that because we are looking at the bigger picture.”

“Definitely a lot more in favour of the Indian players, more like a subcontinent pitch rather than a South African pitch. So that’s what makes the victory even sweeter, basically in foreign conditions, we outplayed them.”

Shreyas Iyer was picked ahead of Suryakumar Yadav in the first ODI in Paarl; however, he failed to make a mark as Iyer was dismissed on 17 off as many deliveries. 

With Suryakumar waiting on the sidelines, will the Indian team management stick with Iyer in the second game?

Former South African batter Daryll Cullinan provided an interesting suggestion on the use of Venkatesh Iyer the bowler ahead of the second ODI in Paarl. He cited Andile Phehlukwayo’s spell in the middle-overs of the Indian run-chase to put forward his point. 

Iyer was picked as the sixth-bowling option in the lineup, one that was touted to bring a balance as well. But like in the T20I series at home, Iyer did not get the opportunity to roll his arms in his ODI debut.

India had an uninspiring start to the post-Virat Kohli captaincy era in limited-overs cricket. Many of KL Rahul’s calls were criticised by former Indian cricketers – a big one being Venkatesh Iyer’s absence in the Indian bowling attack.

India endured a forgettable performance in the 1st ODI, where they conceded a 31-run defeat. The side had conceded 296/4 after Temba Bavuma opted to bat and the Indian middle-order failed to capitalise on a strong start as the visitors fell short.
