Summer is heading out with a bang as intense heat sweeps towards multiple states this week.
February 29 – given that 2024 is a leap year – is the final day of summer but any cooler weather on the way is likely to come as a relief for millions after a scorching end to the month.
South Australia will sweat on Tuesday, with Adelaide forecast to reach 36 degrees, and other parts of the state expected to crack 40 degrees.
On Wednesday, the epicentre of the heatwave will shift to northern Victoria and western New South Wales.
Temperatures will peak in the low 40 degree range over both regions, while Melbourne is set to reach 36 degrees.
Bushfires burning in Victoria’s west turn sky glowing red
Fire authorities have already warned Victorians, particularly in the state’s west, about the extreme danger posed by forecast conditions on Wednesday, which also include strong, hot winds, and dry lightning.
The heat will start easing on Thursday, but Weatherzone said “large parts” of NSW were still set to reach the high 30- and low 40-degree range.
Sydney will hit 35 degrees that day, with western suburbs nearing 40.
But a cold change is set to sweep in afterwards, reducing humidity as autumn takes over.
