Berlin (dpa) – Federal Minister for the Environment Steffi Lemke has announced a €630m investment in marine protection for 2024. Speaking in a radio interview broadcast this Saturday, she described the funds as a huge step forward. Lemke said the funds would come from auctions of wind power licences. Offshore windfarm operators pay to offset possible damage to the environment. According to the minister, the funds are to be used for purposes such as protecting migratory birds and endangered species of porpoises.
Lemke has also expressed concern at the future of water supplies. With rising average temperatures in Germany, she said, the total volume of water required will continue to change in the years and decades to come. Lemke has called for precautions to ensure enough water is available in future.
