While delivering his inauguration speech on Tuesday, September 13, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed they inherited a dilapidated economy from the Jubilee administration.
The DP asked Kenyans for more time to fix the mess, saying the Kenya Kwanza Alliance government would have to start from scratch.
In an interview with NTV on Sunday, September 18, Gachagua insisted the Treasury had empty coffers, and as such, they couldn’t immediately lower the cost of living as promised during the campaigns.

“We have inherited a dilapidated economy. We have found empty coffers. This country has barely any money, and we are starting from scratch. I have asked the people of Kenya to be patient with us because we have a plan, but it cannot be immediate because we have found a bad situation in terms of the economy,” Gachagua said.

Samson Cherargei claims Kenya Kwanza found KSh 93m
Nandi senator Samson Cherargei echoed Gachagua’s sentiments, claiming that they found just KSh 93 million after former president Uhuru Kenyatta left office.
On his Twitter handle, the outspoken lawmaker opined the country was broke and that President William Ruto needed more time to fix the economy since there were few resources at his disposal.

“The economy is no longer in ICU, but death because H.E Ruto found only 93.7 million at the treasury, Uhuru went home with everything. State capture is real. The country is broke, Kenyans be patient H.E Ruto shall fix this through economic transformation and prayers from all of us. Amen,” he tweeted.
Danstan Omari explains Gachagua and Cherargei’s remarks
Lawyer and political analyst Danstan Omari noted that the government operates multiple accounts meaning the figure quoted by the two politicians was incorrect.
He told TUKO.co.ke that the duo played politics to appease their supporters.
“The statement by Rigathi Gachagua was pure politics- he was justifying the claims that they inherited a dilapidated economy. The government has more than 90 accounts, and the KSh 93 million that the DP was talking about can not even run the government for a day,” Omari explained.
The current affairs commentator expounded that the government collects revenue and disburses the funds based on the budget.

“The cash that Cherargei was talking about is the money that the government collects in a second because revenue comes in and goes out. There is no money that is kept in the government coffers. The banking system is in circulation,” he said.
Omari also opined that Central Bank of Kenya governor Patrick Njoroge supported the removal of fuel and unga subsidies to protect his job.
“Check the timing of his sentiments. If that was the case, he should have rendered his resignation long ago- he is just seeking a job in the game the Uhuru’s orphans are playing now,” he added.
