Following the announcement of the inaugural Tour De France Prudential Singapore Criterium set to be held at The Float @ Marina Bay on 29 and 30 October 2022, Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard affirmed his participation in the event. Vingegaard is the most recent cyclist to announce his intention to compete alongside British rider Mark Cavendish, who holds the record for the most Tour de France stage victories with 34.
The first ever Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium is expected to draw cycling fans from all over the world to take part in this historic event. Apart from the professional criterium race involving 32 of the world’s top cyclists, the public will be able to sign up for a variety of rides through the various event partners. All races will be held on a specially designed street circuit that will pass through the city centre. Team Singapore Cycling Federation (SCF), led by Singapore national cyclist and Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist Yeo Boon Kiak, will represent Singapore in the pro race.
“It’s an honour to race among the world’s best,” Yeo said. “The Tour de France is the pinnacle of our sport and being part of this incredible event promises to be an amazing experience which I will never forget. We’ve cycled through the city countless times, but this will probably be our most challenging and exciting ride yet. We’re looking forward to seeing how our race strategy and familiarity with the street circuit measures up against the skills of the best cyclists in the world – we’re sure it will be an amazing experience.”
“The Singapore Cycling Federation is proud to support the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium,” remarked Dr. Hing Siong Chen, President of the Singapore Cycling Federation.
“An event like this not only gives those in Singapore the chance to watch a thrilling professional criterium race up close, but also presents many opportunities for greater engagement and awareness. We know the cycling community in Singapore is an enthusiastic one, and those who want to be a part of the races can join the SCF TDFSG Amateur Championship.”
Public participation
Thanks to a partnership between the organisers and the Singapore Cycling Federation, the public can sign up for two amateur races: The Men’s Open and Men’s Masters criterium. Riders of all classifications can also join the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium by signing up for races organised by the title sponsor Prudential and Brompton.
As part of the two-day event in October, leading life insurer and title sponsor Prudential Singapore will also hold complimentary cycling clinic as part of its Prudential Seeker’s Society. To encourage more people to participate, public sign-ups are allowed for the spectacular cycling event that has attracted many major sponsors including Singapore Airlines, DHL and OUE.
Brompton World Championships
The two-day cycling spectacle will also see London’s iconic folding bicycle manufacturer Brompton, bring its much heralded Brompton World Championship (BWC) to Singapore for the very first time. The BMC race will kick-off at the Float @ Marina Bay and will circle around several of Singapore’s famous streets and landmarks. The race will have a limit of 450 cyclists covering three categories: Men, Women and Veteran. BMC also have a Community Ride accommodating 400 riders.
Tickets for the BWC will be distributed through balloting. Participants who are interested may register their interest online. Following the balloting, successful participants will be notified via email and given a link to the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium ticketing portal where they may register. The registration process is the same for both the category races and the community ride.
