Jonny Edgar has joined MP Motorsport for 2023 FIA F3 season.
Having graduated to F3 in 2021 with Carlin, Edgar enjoyed a progressive second season with Trident as he doubled his points tally from 23 to 46 points, despite having missed the Emilia Romagna and Spanish rounds due to being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease.
The 18 year-old Brit once back up to racing speed after his enforced break went on to claim top-five finishes in four of the final six races of the campaign.
Edgar then joined MP Motorsport for the post-season test in Jerez, Spain where he enjoyed three solid days of running, which has now seen him sign to race for the Dutch team next season.
“I’m really happy to become part of the MP family for 2023”, commented Edgar on his decision to switch from Trident to MP Motorsport next season.
Edgar went on to describe the team as “proven race winners in FIA Formula 3,” having guided four different drivers to five victories in total across the last three seasons – with two of those victories claimed by Brazil’s Caio Collet this year alone.
Edgar will partner Mari Boya plus an unconfirmed third driver of which the 18 year-old felt that meeting Boya and the team in Jerez felt “great” whilst also acting as “a headstart” in gelling together as teammates ready for next season.
The Red Bull junior also acknowledged the difficulties that 2022 saw as he admitted that this year “has been difficult” but he has since focused on his fitness inside the car, and now is “relishing the thought of a fresh attack on FIA F3, as it feels like unfinished business to me.”
MP Motorsport Team Principal, Sander Dorsman added that he is “truly pleased” to sign an “outstanding driver” in Edgar, who possesses “loads of natural talent,” as evidenced by his ADAC F4 success in 2020
Dorsman also said that the team is excited to help begin “rebooting” Edgar’s single-seater career with a “competitive” car, with view of helping him “convert all of his obvious raw speed into strong results.”
