Kaizer Chiefs’ pursuit of star player Fawaaz Basadien addressed by Stellenbosch FC CEO, as per FARPost.
Stellies CEO Rob Benadie has responded to Chiefs’ ongoing efforts to acquire utility player Fawaaz Basadien, whose departure the club is determined to prevent. Amakhosi have had their bids for the 27-year-old left-footer rejected as they seek to bolster their left-back position.
Basadien has become a crucial player for Stellenbosch FC over the past two seasons, attracting significant interest from Kaizer Chiefs. His agent, Basia Michaels, revealed to SABC Sport that Basadien has expressed a strong desire to move to Naturena before the transfer window closes.
Benadie’s commitment to retaining Basadien
Speaking at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Benadie affirmed the club’s commitment to keeping Basadien. “Fawaaz is a consummate professional, yes there’s an offer from Kaizer Chiefs [but] we improved his contract recently,” Benadie said. “He’s still contracted to Stellenbosch Football Club. And we want to keep him; he is a fantastic player. We don’t want to go backwards with our squad.”
Benadie highlighted Basadien’s significance to the team and reassured that the club is focused on maintaining their current performance levels. “We want to continue and do similar type of performances as we did last year. So, Fawaaz is very important to us, he knows that, he understands that. There will always be pressure from the press and from other clubs for a lot of our players because we are doing so well now,” Benadie added.
Concerns about the extended PSL transfer window
Benadie also expressed concerns about the PSL transfer window, which remains open for nearly a month after the season starts. He noted that this extended period allows other clubs to monitor Stellenbosch’s players closely, increasing the risk of losing key talent.
“There’s a number of players not just at our club but at other clubs also because the transfer window is open for so long, which is really unsettling,” Benadie said. “At least we are playing games; other clubs aren’t playing games. They have to wait without playing games and transfer speculation on their players and so on.”
Benadie reassured that Stellenbosch FC remains steadfast in their efforts to retain Basadien. “We’re quite steady on a certain number of players. We have already lost some important players, some of them were unavoidable. So, you’re asking about Fawaaz, we don’t want to lose Fawaaz. We will do our utmost best to keep him here and keep him happy,” he concluded.
