Kaizer Chiefs recently missed out on the signing of winger Elias Mokwana, who recently signed for Esperance.
Mokwana snubbed Chiefs and completed his move to Esperance on Thursday evening, after completing a medical.
It’s thought that Chiefs had also put in a bid for Mokwana, but it fell short of Sekhukhune United’s valuation. The bid that was discussed was R12 million, while Babina Noko were believed to be holding out for R15 million. There was hope that Amakhosi would return as the feeling was the player wanted to stay in the country.
Mokwana chose Esperance
Mokwana is also believed to be a Chiefs fan and viewed a move to Naturena as a dream. That move did not transpire, however, as he now finds himself in Tunisia with Esperance. Upon accepting the bid, and seeing the player complete his medical, Sekhukhune confirmed the sale of the Bafana Bafana international.
The big saga was thought be the transfer fee. On Thursday, this publication reported that Esperance paid just over R10 million for Mokwana. That came as a shock as the general consensus was that Chiefs were not willing to pay higher. Now with the number coming up to be $400 000 by North African media, that means they paid even less than what initially thought. That amount translates to just over R7 million.
Not only is that less than half of what Sekhukhune were reportedly asking for from Chiefs. It is also just over half of the R12 million Amakhosi offered Babina Noko for Mokwana. Now according to agent Mike Makaab, Kaizer Motaung JR tried everything to bring the player to the club.
Chiefs tried hard to sign him
“Kaizer Chiefs did everything in their power to try to sign Elias Mokwana, but the player decided to join Esperance de Tunis. I don’t represent the player, but I tried to initiate a deal between the two [parties].” Said Makaab to Gagasi FM.
Looks like Chiefs can’t be blamed for a lack of effort then. Khosi fans, how do you feel about Mokwana choosing Esperance instead? Feel free to leave your thoughts and feelings in the comments below.
