Despite failing to make the postseason this year, Kevin Durant believes that Aaron Rodgers is capable of winning another league MVP.
On a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers was asked about his future in the NFL. While the four-time MVP did admit that he isn’t ready to make any final decisions, he also commented on the level of play he is still capable of. The 39-year-old said, in the “right situation,” he can win another MVP.
“Do I still think I can play? Of course. Can I play at a high level? Yeah. The highest,” Rodgers said. “I think I can win MVP again in the right situation. Right situation, is that Green Bay or is that somewhere else? I’m not sure. But I don’t think you should shut down any opportunity. But like I said during the season, it’s got to be both sides actually wanting to work together moving forward.”
Naturally, Rodgers’ comments went viral. One salient athlete in particular who caught wind of his temerity was Kevin Durant. The two-time champion supported Rodgers’ claims in the comments under Sideline Sources’ post.
“He ain’t lyin,” Durant said of Rodgers’ MVP remarks.
Not the First time Durant backs Rodgers
This is not the first time Durant has publicly lauded Rodgers. Back in October, after the Packers defeated the Patriots, 27-24 in overtime, the 34-year-old extolled Rodgers for his scintillating performance.
Durant tweeted “good shit 12.” This came after Rodgers threw for 251 passing yards and completed 60% of his passes. He also had two touchdown passes.
Rodgers is unclear on his future
Despite still being confident in his playing ability, Rodgers stands pact in being uncertain about his future in the NFL. The Packers are not pressing him for an answer and there are a lot of angles Rodgers must consider before committing to a decision.
“They’re not pressing for any type of specific answer, and I’m not mentally or emotionally at that point to give one,” Rodgers said.
“Look, I think you have a feeling where you are leaning, but there’s a lot of things that come into play,” he continued. “I think just some on my side, it’s the physical part, it’s the emotional part, it’s the spiritual part. It’s the ability to go back out there and give it one hundred percent. It’s also the situation and where the team is at and the focus moving forward, short term, long term. Then it comes down to intuition and what it feels like in your body and what it feels like in your mind. Once you commit, then you commit. You move forward, whatever the decision is, so you know, I just need some time right now. I don’t need to ask anybody to respect my time or whatever. That’s going to be the answer until I’m ready, and when I’m ready to give my opinion like I was last year, I’m either all in or I’m out.”
2022 was a subpar campaign by Rodgers’ standards. The Super Bowl champion threw for his fewest yards in a season in which he played at least 10 games and generated 26 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. Furthermore, the Packers missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018 and finished with a record of 8-9.
