The Dallas Mavericks have suddenly faded out of the title conversation.
Since trading Luka Doncic, the Mavericks have been marred by heavy criticism. In the wake of the backlash, general manager Nico Harrison has been the one who absorbed all of the flak, with team governor Patrick Dumont obtaining his fair share, too.
But perhaps the biggest event to hit the team is the injury suffered to the player they traded for, 2020 NBA champions Anthony Davis.
Davis is working towards a return, but without him, and Dereck Lively and Daniel Gafford, the Mavs have been overtaken in the standings by the Golden State Warriors.
Regardless of the fallout, Kevin Garnett is convinced that the Mavericks shouldn’t be slept on by everyone from a competitive standpoint.
Kevin Garnett believes the Dallas Mavericks are the scariest team when healthy
Many have ripped the Mavericks for trading Doncic away, with Pat Beverley claiming they got fleeced.
But on paper, Kevin Garnett is intrigued by the team’s potential when healthy.
Speaking to the KG Certified podcast with Paul Pierce, Garnett offered his excitement for the Mavericks’ chances to contend at their best when everyone is available.
“No one is talking about a healthy Mavs,” he said. “The Mavs probably are the scariest team.
“It’s going to be box office. Give me 15 games with them. 10 to 12 games, something like that and then watch.
“I saw three quarters of what it can look like…”
Kevin Garnett’s support for the Mavs could be rooted in his past MVP campaign for Anthony Davis
Garnett’s confidence for the Mavericks is interesting and raises a valid point. The ball club remain in the competitive race for the title thanks to the stellar play of Kyrie Irving.
Despite missing Anthony Davis who went down in his Mavs debut, Dallas is still at the eighth spot of the West with 32-28, just a game away from the sixth seed.
Davis will serve as the difference maker for the Mavericks’ championship odds. And Garnett was notably high for him to the extent that he previously claimed that the superstar big man will be the league MVP one day.
Speaking in 2023, Garnett said: “I’m expecting Anthony Davis to be MVP in these next two years … it’s time, it’s time, you can’t let Joker [Nikola Jokić] come in the league and surpass [you],” Garnett said.
“Anthony Davis can do everything they can do. Anthony Davis can do everything Joker can do, he can do everything Embiid can do. … I’m expecting him to be MVP if not this year, definitely next year.
“And he’s going to have to take the reins of ‘Yeah, I’m the best player in the league.’”
Once Davis and their entire lineup become healthy and ready to roll, the entire league has to watch out for the Mavericks.
