It’s an early start for the Silver Ferns to keep their Commonwealth Games gold medal hopes alive in Birmingham on Saturday night.
Dame Noeline Taurua’s side take on Jamaica in the first semifinal at 9am local time (8pm NZT), after their 10-goal defeat to England in their final pool match.
Jamaica were surprise top qualifiers from the other pool after an upset win over Australia and will be tough to topple for the Ferns who rarely looked like getting past England.
New Zealand ended day eight with a hefty 41-medal total including 17 gold, with Tom Walsh’s shot put win drawing the team level with their record gold haul in Auckland in 1990.
New Zealand’s day nine starts at the bowling green, with women’s pair Katelyn Inch and Selina Goddard looking to bag bronze against Malaysia at 7.30pm.
High jumper Keeley O’Hagan and 1500m runner Sam Tanner both chase medals in the morning session at the track, before Gold Coast 2018 hammer throw champion Julia Ratcliffe and Nicole Bradley go for gold in the evening (6am NZT) along with 400m hurdler Portia Bing (6.30am) and 5000m runner Geordie Beamish (7.10am).
Squash gold medal favourites Joelle King and Paul Coll face India at 1.15am for a spot in the mixed doubles final, cricket’s White Ferns face a daunting semifinal against Australia at 5am before beach volleyballers Alice Zeimann and Shaunna Polley, and boxer Uila Mau’u brace for semifinals to progress to their respective gold medal contests.
