After a sensational run ended in disappointing defeat, the Matildas are understandably feeling mixed emotions today.
Almost all of them have posted to social media, so here’s what they’re saying.
Caitlin Foord: It’s hard to find the right words to sum up this campaign after the disappointed of last night, it hurts ALOT to not have a medal to show for the tournament we’ve just had.
But what we have done is much bigger… We’ve united the whole country, inspired the next generation, made history, changed how football is viewed here in Aus but most importantly we made a lot of Australian’s proud.
To leave a legacy was our main goal and I think it’s safe to say we’ve achieved that.
I couldn’t be prouder to be an Aussie & Matilda — Thank you Australia
Ellie Carpenter: A rollercoaster of emotions is what this beautiful sport brings. We wanted more and it will hurt for a while. But we just changed football in this country forever. I am proud. We love you Australia. Thank you.
Mackenzie Arnold: What an emotional rollercoaster this last month has been. How it ended hurts, and it probably will for a while but some of the moments we created together are going to be remembered forever.
I have so much love for this team and this country. Thank you for creating history with us Australia. We couldn’t have achieved what we did without you.
Steph Catley: This World Cup, we wanted to leave a lasting impression, we wanted to leave a legacy and we fought until the very end trying to do that. Looking around at the full stadiums throughout the entire tournament and the streets flooded with Tilly’s jerseys, I get the feeling that we’ve achieved that. And being part of that will forever be one of the greatest achievements of my life. What a ride it was, thank you for being with us every step of the way
Teagan Micah: Emotions are all over the place today although I couldn’t be prouder of this team. We have to measure success in different ways and to leave a legacy on football in Australia is something to be proud of and to celebrate. Thankyou australia for all your love
Lydia Williams: Bittersweet.
As competitors and athletes you always want to walk away with something tangible. But in hindsight we will look and see that this has changed football forever in Australia.
Thank you for allowing yourselves to get swept up in the game that us footballers so desperately love. Thank you for all the support and camaraderie. Thank you for believing in us.
Emily van Egmond: Disappointed to not of come away with a medal to show for the hard work this team put in — But beyond proud to be part of this amazing group & it’s so incredible to of created history & leave a ever-lasting legacy. Australia we couldn’t of done this without you! Thank you
